A tummy-tuck is a major surgical procedure to flatten the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat from the lower abdominal region and tightening muscles of the abdominal wall. The best candidates for tummy-tucks or abdominoplasty, are men and women who are in relatively good shape, but who are bothered by large fat deposits or loose abdominal skin that won't respond to diet or exercise. This surgery is particularly helpful for women who, after multiple pregnancies have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin beyond the point where they can return to normal. Loss of skin elasticity in older patients, which frequently occurs with mild obesity, can also be improved.

Is an abdominoplasty right for me?

You may be a good candidate for abdominoplasty if you have one or more of the following conditions:

  • Excess or loose, sagging abdominal skin
  • An abdomen that protrudes and is out of proportion to the rest of your body
  • Abdominal muscles that have been weakened by pregnancy or aging
  • Excess fat that is concentrated beneath the abdominal skin.

How is abdominoplasty performed?

Complete abdominoplasty usually takes two to three hours, depending on the extent of work required. A horizontal incision is generally placed just within or above the pubic area. (See diagram) The length of the incision, which extends outward toward the hip bones, depends largely on the amount of skin that needs to be removed.

Are there other options?

The "mini" abdominoplasty - This procedure may benefit you if you are primarily dissatisfied with the appearance of the abdominal area below the naval. A mini abdominoplasty requires only a short horizontal incision and no naval incision. It will not remove loose skin above the naval.

LipoSelectionSM by VASER® alone - If you have good skin elasticity and muscle tone, LipoSelectionSM by VASER® alone may be used to remove abdominal fat. This alternative may appeal to you if you plan to become pregnant in the future.
