Purpose:
Women with very large, pendulous breasts may experience a variety
of medical problems caused by excessive weight - from back and
neck pain and skin irritation to skeletal deformities and breathing
problems. Bra straps may leave andantinos in your shoulders. And
unusually large breasts can make a woman-or teenage girl- feel
extremely self-conscious and unable to enjoy everyday activities,
or participate in sports and exercise.
Breast reduction,
technically known as reduction mammaplasty, is designed for such
women. This procedure removes fat, glandular tissue, and skin
from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. It
can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin around
the nipple. The goal is to give you smaller, better-shaped breasts
in proportion with the rest of your body, and to alleviate the
functional symptoms described above.
The best
candidates for breast reduction:
Breast reduction
is usually performed for physical relief rather than simply for
cosmetic improvement. Many women who have this surgery are troubled
by large, sagging breasts that restrict their activities and cause
them physical discomfort. The best candidates are those who are
mature enough to fully understand the procedure and have realistic
expectations about the results. Although breast reduction is generally
not recommended for those women intending to breast feed, up to
30% of women who have had this procedure were successful.
Surgical
Risks:
Breast reduction
is not a simple operation, but it's normally safe when performed
by a qualified plastic surgeon in a qualified surgical facility.
As with any surgery, there is always possibility of complications,
and these will be discussed extensively during your pre-op consultation.
The procedure does leave noticeable, permanent scars, although
they'll be covered by your bra or bathing suit. (Poor healing
and wider scars are more common in smokers.) There are new surgical
techniques available which shorten the length of the scars.
Insurance
coverage:
Because the goal of breast reduction is the relief of symptoms this
procedure is often covered by insurance. After your initial consultation
we will need to send a request for pre-authorization to your insurance
company. We will also need to take a set of photos to accompany
your pre-authorization request.
